Driver and Pedestrian Safety Starts with Responsibility
According to construction industry statistics, safety incidents involving worksite pedestrians, vehicles and/or mobile equipment occur at an alarming rate. So it is imperative to stay informed on how to be a responsible driver and pedestrian – and keep one another safe. The following guidelines will help:
Responsible Pedestrian Safety
- Walk on sidewalks whenever they’re available, and obey all signs and signals.
- Stay on the “beaten path” and avoid shortcuts through construction yards, which may have holes or trip hazards.
- Stay alert; don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes and ears off your path.
- Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections whenever possible. (This is where drivers expect pedestrians.) If a crosswalk or intersection is not available, locate a well-lit area where you have the best view of traffic.
- Look for cars in all directions – including those turning.
- Never assume a driver sees you. Make eye contact with drivers as they approach you to ensure you are seen.
- Wear a bright reflective vest/clothing at all times and use a flashlight at night.
- Watch for cars entering or exiting driveways or backing up in parking lots.
- Avoid alcohol and drugs when walking; they impair your abilities and judgment.
Responsible Driver Safety

- Stay alert; don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes and ears off the road. Avoid loud music that may impair you from hearing emergency warnings.
- Always be alert that pedestrians may attempt to cross the roadway if a crosswalk or intersection is unavailable.
- Never assume a pedestrian sees you. Stop, make eye contact with pedestrians as they approach you to ensure you are seen, and give them the right of way.
- Watch for pedestrians entering or exiting driveways or backing up in parking lots.
- Avoid alcohol and drugs when driving; they impair your abilities and judgment.
Champion Crew of the Month
Work is nearing successful completion at Fermi 2 Nuclear Generating Station in Newport, Michigan, thanks to the efforts of our well-prepared and dedicated Champion team.
As always, management and supervision prioritized safety at the forefront of this project, guiding a composite crew of skilled laborers and nuclear coatings specialists to complete some very daunting tasks. For example, the team worked collectively to overcome several substantial obstacles to successfully replace the facility’s dry well moisture barrier in its entirety, the first activity of its kind. The team also completed blasting and recoating of the RHR (residual heat removal) heat exchanger, along with several other projects, to support the refueling outage.
This crew is a testament to the positive safety culture that is paramount at Champion. The Fermi 2 team has worked more than 10,000 hrs without any safety incidents. That’s a true embodiment of all that makes us Champions. Congratulations and thank you to a well-deserved Crew of the Month!
