Champion Specialty Services is proud to be playing a key role in the preservation and modernization of one of the nation’s most iconic structures.
Our work began with the complex installation of a suspended platform system beneath the lower level of the George Washington Bridge, where our crews rigged during challenging winter night shifts to accommodate daytime traffic flow. That platform now spans from the New Jersey Abutment, past the NJ Tower, and is nearing midspan over the Hudson.
We’re now moving into the next phase: surface preparation and abatement. This includes building containment from the platform, abrasive blasting to remove old coatings, and applying a prime coat to prepare for critical steel repairs and traveler system replacement.
Once all steel repairs are complete and the new travelers are in place, our team will return to the starting point to begin applying additional layers of epoxy and polyurethane over the primed and repaired sections to ensure long-term protection. This multi-stage process will continue throughout the year as we work to reinforce and restore key structural elements. Stay tuned for more updates and behind-the-scenes views of our work in progress.
