The I-65/I-70 North Split Interchange Project: Making Bridges Resilient

The I-65/I-70 North Split Interchange Project called for the reconstruction of a highly trafficked interstate interchange located in the Northeast corner of downtown Indianapolis. The overall project goals included reconfiguring the interchange into three levels, replacing approximately 27 lane miles of pavement, eliminating two ramps, replacing multiple bridge structures, improving local feeder streets, implementing a drainage system, and creating a more modern aesthetic by introducing new landscape elements.

The Champion Challenge

Champion was selected to pressure wash and paint the MSE walls, traffic barrier rails, monuments, and structural steel on 48 unique bridges within the I-65/I-70 North Split. To accomplish this goal, approximately 20 union painters worked on site both day and night, depending on the Motion of Traffic (MOT) and shifting demands of the project schedule. Champion accomplished its work by implementing an innovative access strategy that involved the use of aerial lifts. Originally scheduled to start closer to the Winter 2020 general project start date, Champion’s scope of work was delayed until April 2023, requiring its experienced crews to respond to an extremely accelerated schedule in order to meet the September 2023 completion date.

Dependable Partners for Heavy Construction

Upgrading the North Split improves safety and operations for the approximately 214,000 motorists who travel it every day. Champion worked closely with general contractor Superior Steel to deliver on the expert replacement or rehabilitation of nearly 50 bridges–work that was integral to the overarching success of this complex infrastructure project.
